This year Acacia Hill is focusing its year on Best Practice. Each month we will look at a part of our new philosopy aswell as a part of Loris Malaguzzi’s (Founder of the Reggio Approach) Hundred Languages.

2015

For January we looked at ‘How we build meaningful relationships with children’ from our philosophy and from the 100 languages we focused on ‘exploration with hands’.

When interacting positively with young children we learnt to
•use a warm, engaging, and comforting voice,
•follow the child’s lead,
•are responsive,
•say the child’s name,
•respond to child’s vocalizations, and
•use good positioning so the child can see caregivers’ face or the play objects.

We also discovered 5 reasons why sensory play is so important
1. Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain’s pathways, which lead to the child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks.
2. Sensory play supports language development, cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction.
3. This type of play aids in developing and enhancing memory
4. Sensory play is great for calming an anxious or frustrated child
5. This helps children learn sensory attributes (hot, cold, sticky, dry)
